Brand History

Michael Kors was founded in 1981 in the US by American designer Michael Kors. From a young child, Kors was interested in fashion and had a passion for design. Encouraged by his mother, the young designer pursued a career in the industry and enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, however, he later dropped out. Still determined to develop in the fashion world, Kors took a job in a Manhattan boutique across from Bergdorf Goodman. He progressed quickly and became a designer and the visual display head for the boutique. Impressed by his talent and know-how, Bergdorf's fashion director at the time Dawn Mello asked if Kors would sell his collection in the luxury department store. This was the breakthrough Michael Kors needed and in 1981 the brand was launched. The designer's clothing and accessories quickly became successful as unlike other luxury fashion brands at the time, Kors’ collection was ready-to-wear. His pieces were comfortable and practical for the everyday. Following his initial success, Michael Kors later launched a men’s line and a line of handbags and accessories.
