For many following the lives of celebrities is not only a source of entertainment. The lives of the rich and famous have become a goal to strive for as well as a source of inspiration. For similar reasons, celebrities are often trend-setters. In our new series we’ll look at celebrity-inspired engagement rings and we’ve decided to start with the a celebrity couple, and ring, which has recently been prominently featured in the public eye.

On Wednesday the 12th of January musician Machine Gun Kelly and actress Megan Fox announced their surprise engagement. The couple was first rumoured to have started dating in May of 2020. After almost two years together, they are considered one of the more unconventional Hollywood pairings. The Jennifer’s Body star posted a video of the big moment to Instagram. Machine Gun Kelly, whose real name is Colson Baker, also posted a video of the magnificent ring to his social media page. In the caption of his video, Baker explained the meaning behind the ring and where he got his inspiration.

Designed by him in collaboration with British jewellery designer Stephen Webster, the engagement “ring” is actually two rings with magnetic bands. The singer went on to elaborate on the reason behind his choice. The large emerald is Megan Fox’s birthstone, while the diamond is his. This was also meant to signify the coming together of the pair as a couple and connecting spiritually. The ring is designed so that when worn together the two pear-cut gemstones form an asymmetric heart. The bands are set with additional diamonds, giving the already glamourous ring an even more sparkling appearance.

Emeralds are one of the oldest gemstones used in engagement rings. They are connected with truth and love. In ancient Rome it was seen as the gemstone of Venus, the goddess of love. Emeralds are also the birthstone for the month of May. Though emeralds are famously used in jewellery, the gemstone is not as hardwearing as some of its counterparts such as sapphire or diamonds.
