4 Sci-Fi Watches Dr Who Would Be Proud Of

Peter Capaldi returns to our screens for his second season the Doctor tonight alongside companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) in Episode One of Dr Who’s Season 9. Many are incredibly excited to see what the show has in store this time, especially since we already know that popular villains The Daleks and beloved character River Song are also returning to the screen. Although admittedly I’m expecting this series to be just as confusing as every one Steven Moffat has written.

The good news is that you don’t need to build yourself a Tardis (and somehow become a Time Lord) if you want to get hold of a futuristic Sci-Fi Watch. Read on and learn about 4 Sci-Fi watches Dr Who would be proud of!

The Robot Controlling Watch

When you first see this watch it really doesn’t look all that special. It just looks like a normal digital watch with a monochrome screen. However, this watch has a secret. You can control a miniaturised Dalek with the buttons on the side. In addition, the watch features a picture of a Dalek on it, as a hint to the hidden picture.

Neon Green is Sci-Fi, Right?

When Diesel released the X-Ray 2010 line of watches we can only imagine that the brief given to the designers was “make it look as much like Sci-Fi watches as possible”. Neon green seems to be the colour of choice for many Sci-Fi movies and this watch doesn’t disappoint with its design. Other style elements on the watch are incredibly reminiscent of Sci-Fi too. Tourbillon Watches…In General

Anything which is designed to “negate the effect of gravity” belongs completely in the realm of Sci-Fi. In this case, it is actually a piece of real life Sci-Fi that was developed in the 18th century. While you can’t get hold of a tourbillon unless you part with an extortionate amount of money, they are certainly worth it if you can afford one. Two incredibly Sci-Fi tourbillon watches are the Tourbillon Black Hole, with an incredibly futuristic design and the Deep Space Tourbillon, which pays homage to the Deep Space Nine Star Trek series.

In a Galaxy Far Far Away…

Any Star Wars fan would go crazy for a watch that celebrated the movies. Seiko has collaborated with the franchise and created some watches inspired by the movies. The Star Wars Limited Edition watches were released in 2012 and sold for over $1,000! The R2-D2 watch is a fully digital watch which even displays some scenes from the movies. The line of models also features other watches inspired by characters from the movies. Yoda, Darth Vader as well as the Stormtroopers, have now been immortalized not only on screen but in Seiko history.

The Dr Who Watch

As one of the longest running Sci-Fi series, it’s a suprise Dr Who doesn’t have more timepieces dedicated to it. Inspiring millions of people over the years, the franchise has truly made a mark on the genre. One Dr Who watch created in 2013 displays a re-enactment of the Tardis travelling through time on the clock face. It’s very difficult to look at the watch without admiring the amount of effort that has gone into designing such an incredible homage to the series. If it doubled as a sonic screwdriver holder then it would certainly be a watch that even the Doctor couldn’t do without!

There are a lot of Sci-Fi watches out there on the market and as technology continues to improve there will certainly be many more. Who knows what incredible Sci-Fi-like technological developments we’ll see over the next 12 months. For now, let’s just sit back and enjoy the new series of Dr Who on BBC 1.
