The REC 901 RS Limited Edition…

The Finest 911 Ever Built? The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7

The dial of the REC 901 RS is cut directly from the 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7.

The Porsche 911 Carrera “Rennsport” RS 2.7 was the top first-gen 911 and marked the very first production street/race 911 widely available for members of the public. Only 1,580 were ever produced, making this a hugely rare and desirable collectors car. And as the car is still considered by many ‘Porschephiles’ to be the finest 911 ever built, prices on those still running have since skyrocketed, making it one the most sought-after and legendary sports cars in history. And now REC watches are cutting one up to produce these beautiful watches!

We have previously seen REC produce fantastic watches from Mini Coopers, and Ford Mustangs, and even a Limited Edition Mustang RTR, made form the car of drift champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. Shop that watch here.

REC watches were able to find parts from one the legendary Porsche Carrera 911 RS´s to go into their latest Limited Edition. But it was not just any RS that they found…

The Extraordinary Story Of VIN 9113600237

The story of how this limited edition watch came about is truly fantastic, it began with the discovery that the owner of the car being researched for this new project was the German rally driver Peter Rumpfkeil. During his 3-year ownership, Rumpfkeil’s car participated in several rallies across Europe, including the notorious Monte Carlo Rally in the years 1976 and 1977 and Lombard RAC Rally in 1976. This has built a fantastic racing pedigree for the car, creating a story and history behind the piece.

1982

Jørgen Schultz was the next owner of the car, in 1982 the battered 911 RS was acquired by the Danish car enthusiast , who initially was completely unaware of the rarity of this car. When he did become aware that the car he had acquired was one of the original Carrera RS’s, he immediately began work restoring it. And over the next 3 decades he persisted, until he finally sold the car in 2015, which left behind several unusable parts, most of which are now incorporated in the Limited Edition REC 901 RS watch. This, and much more, is all included in the scannable story card, which accompanies every 901 RS Limited Edition timepiece. This story card gives you access to everything you could possibly need to know about the car, and how it transformed into the timepiece that you see before you today.

This would usually be the end of the road…

On June 26th 2018, REC received an email from a certain German gentleman, named Timo Rumpfkeil. By pure, unexpected coincidence, Timo, the son of the original car owner Peter Rumpfkeil, had learned that the brand were working on a Limited Edition Collection made from this very car.

Timo was able to provide REC watches with a far more complete background of this unique vehicle, which has really helped to push the timepiece forward into the fantastic watch that it has become. In addition to a range of original images and details of the 911 Carrera “Rennsport”, Timo was able to inform them that the first owner of the car was in fact none other than the famous German Racing driver Clemens Schickentanz, who was the winner of both the GT European Championship and several World Championship rounds in the GT class.
