Turtle Power! – World Turtle Day

world turtle day thumbnail

As you may have heard if you are a twitter fan or fan of the teenage mutant ninja turtles that today is in fact #worldturtleday. It is being sponsored this year by the non profit organisation called American Tortoise Rescue. Th rescue centre for American Tortoises was established in 1990 and since then they have been on a mission to protect all of the species of tortoise and turtle in America. This year actually marks the 17th annual World Turtle Day® which is happening today on May 23rd.

Thew World Turtle Day was actually established as a drive to get people to discuss and talk about the way turtle and tortoise habitats are disappearing around the world but also as a celebration for the awesome ninja’s themselves. It serves as a reminder to the world that these reptiles are very interesting and a part of history that needs protecting for year to come

The American Turtle Rescue was founded by Marshall Thompson and Susan Tellem who believe strongly that animals including reptiles like turtles and tortoises should be treated humanely at all times. Together at the rescue have managed to find forever homes for approximately 4,000 tortoises and turtles since opening their doors and even assist when law enforcement confiscate turtles that are being trafficked or treated inhumanely and they provide incredibly useful information and referrals to people with sick, abandoned or neglected turtles around the globe.

In the spirit of all things turtle I thought we should put together a list of our most popular Turtle watches that we sell on our website, we are also offering to send a donation percentage of all sales of the turtles watches this month to American Turtle Rescue in America!

PARTNER OF THE SEA TURTLE CONSERVANCY

The Certina brand joined the Sea Turtle Conservancy in 2017, becoming a proud partner of the Florida based organisation. The primary aim of the Sea Turtle Conservancy is to not only conserve the natural habitats of the remaining sea turtles in the Caribbean but also to ensure the survival of the sea turtles in that area. The organisation was founded in 1959 which incidentally was the same year that Certina developed the ultra-resistant DS Concept.

POWERMATIC 80 MOVEMENT

You may not know what a Powermatic movement is but that’s not to worry neither did I until we took on this brand. I’m sure you’ve probably heard of a ‘power reserve’ this defines the amount of time that an automatic watch will operate until when it is fully wound, this is usually between 38-42 hours depending on the brand and movement. Certina decided to take this a step further when they developed their Powermatic 80 Movement, this allows any watch with this movement to work fully for an incredible 80 hours before needing to be wound again. This means you can wear your watch for three whole days without it needing to be wound at all!

ISO 6425 STANDARD

For those who are new to diving watches ISO 6425 standard is the name they give for the official definition of a ‘Divers Watch’. Only the best timepieces can achieve an ISO 6425 standard by undergoing a list of exacting requirements which are set out for them by the International Organization for Standardization. Watches that manage to pass the tests of the requirements pass and are able to be called a ‘Divers Watch’. This specific Certina watch has a number of  useful functions and safety features which make it the ideal companion for diving… oh and did we mention that its water resistance rating is 300m and it has been tested for three hours under water!

Seiko Prospex Mini Sea Turtle PADI

Seiko Prospex Mini Sea Turtle PADI Automatic Divers Watch – SRPC41k1

You have probably heard of the Seiko PADI turtle or the Prospex Turtle at some point and possibly even own one of the range. It’s a huge part of Seiko and almost every serious collector will have one in their collection, they were originally released in 2016 and were more than likely one of their biggest releases of the year. Whilst this watch was impressive in design and features for divers it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea and I’ve talked to numerous people who were put off by the bulky case which either wouldn’t fit on their wrist of just didn’t look quite right, this being said almost all the people I’ve ever discussed the Turtle Seiko’s with have said that they would be interested if they brought one out with a smaller case size.

For these people in my life, I found you an answer! Seiko have heard the calls from many a fan for a smaller case and slight tweaks to the design and have produced four new turtle divers watches with a twist… They’re Mini! Their model codes are as follows; SRPC35K1, SRPC37K1, SRPC39K1, and SRPC41K1 (which is pictured above). All of the models are very well known online as Mini Sea Turtle Divers even though this was not the name given to them by the brand is is one that they have taken on-board when fans nicknames them pre-release.
