REC’s 901 RWB ROTANA Limited Edition

The 901 RWB ROTANA Limited Edition

REC watches was founded as a way to unite the founders’ love of cars and watches into one. Engineered to perfection and inspired by history, every REC timepiece has within itself a salvaged or recycled part from an iconic vehicle that is beyond repair. Repurposing these parts breathes new life into the classics and imbues each timepiece with character and soul. Born from a concept to RECover, RECycle and REClaim, what the brand offers is the chance to be a part of something bigger. Every single REC watch is visibly unique and tells a story. REC’s 901 RWB ROTANA limited edition watch showcases not only the brand’s love of cars but their dedication to extreme attention to detail.

Inspiration And Pushing Boundaries

REC’s 901 RWB ROTANA limited edition was inspired by famous Porsche car-tuner Akira Nakai’s personal RWB Porsche 911: Rotana. The japanese tuner and founder of RAUH-Welt BEGRIFF, is considered an artist and a visionary. He specialises in installing custom wide-body kits on classic Porsche models.

Directly subverting Porsche’s design ideology, Nakai creates cars which are unmistakable and extreme. When talking about the automobile which inspired the 901 RWB ROTANA limited edition watch, REC said it is “an absolutely outrageous, almost blasphemous (…) car”. Nakai has brought to life his purple turbo vision for the Porsche ROTANA. Distorting the classic, sleek lines of the original Porsche, the 901 RWB ROTANA is a spectre of the limitless imagination of an artist. The car’s design was inspired by a purple Lamborghini when the car-tuner was on a visit to the UAE.

A Watch With Character

In the design of the limited edition, REC have tried to capture the essence of the car and convey its character as much as possible while maintaining the unmistakable REC silhouette and look. Raw material from the car has been incorporated into the watch dial, coated with clear lacquer in order to be better preserved. The designers of this project have added elements from the car directly while also paying homage to its design through many subtle details.

The case measures 44 mm, 46 mm with the incorporated extra wide body kit. It is made of black PVD coated stainless steel. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal protects the detailed dial. The stainless steel case back on the model is inspired by the rims on the car. It features a deep etching and laser engraving to make the case back look like the rim, adding the REC logo in the middle. The metal dial is directly cut and taken from the hood of the car. Contrasting the black outer ring are luminescent hour markers and hands. The positioning of the month and the day apertures is inspired by the oil temperature/pressure gauge on the vehicle. A date aperture is featured at the 6 o’clock position. The side panels on the dial and the second hand are coloured purple as an homage to the 901 RWB ROTANA’s colour. A black rubber strap ensures comfortable wear. As a finishing touch, an incorporated RAUH-WELT sticker decal completes the dial design.
