Every year on the 31st of October pumpkins are being carved, sweets are being collected as children make the rounds trick or treating and Halloween themed parties are taking place. High street stores are now brimming with Halloween decor (not to mention Christmas decor as well!) and those that love this time of year are celebrating. But what is Halloween? Where did it come from?
Halloween comes from a festival that took place over 2000 years ago and was named Samhain by the Celtic’s. It was known as the time of year when farmers would harvest their crops and the start of cold and dark winter nights. The festival also symbolised the boundary between the world of the living and the dead. It was believed that on the night of the 31st, ghosts of the dead would revisit the mortal world. In light of this, bonfires would be lit across towns and villages to ward off any evil spirits.
Between the Celtic belief and how we know Halloween today has been transformed. After the Roman’s invaded the Celtic regions, many of the festivals were abandoned. It was only when Christian teaching began to surface within Britain did this festival begin to form. It was first named All Saints Day or All Hallows Day and was a day to mark those who had died for their beliefs. All Hallows Day was moved to the 1st of November by Pope Gregory which meant that the 31st of October became known as Hallows Eve. Since then it has now evolved into Halloween as we know it today.
If you like to celebrate Halloween and are in a festive mood this year then we have picked out a few Halloween charms for those that like the memorabilia of the day.
