The Seiko 5 Sports is Re-Born

Header

The Seiko 5 Sports have been delivering a consistently high level of reliability, durability and performance for over 50 years now. Providing all of this with fantastic value too. These are the things that have made the Seiko 5 Sports such an endearing model to lovers of mechanical watches, and watch collectors around the globe.

Today, this much loved timepiece is re-born, with a brand new design, and a broader collection than ever! A brand new Seiko 5, and and a brand new collection, with the same values, but a fresh new look.

Born in the 60’s. Loved ever since.

The first ever Seiko 5 timepiece was the Seiko Sportmatic 5, which was first launched in 1963. This was Seiko, and Japan’s first ever automatic day-date watch! Named the Seiko 5 after the 5 key attributes that each watch was promised to have. These being an automatic movement, a day-date display, water resistance, a recessed crown, and a case and bracelet built to last. This was all put together, along with the new at the time mainspring and shock resistance system, the features of the Seiko 5 gave it a distinctive strength and aesthetic.

It was 5 years later when we were introduced to the first of the Seiko 5 Sports watches. Created for the continuously growing demand for watches that could be trusted whilst playing sports, from both men and women. Not only did this latest model still retain the fundamental values of the 5, but it also came with a few additions to make it ideal for sports. These included enhanced water resistance, luminous hands and markers, and a strengthened crystal glass. This model began to pick up in popularity extremely quickly, and over the next decades, it began to build a great international reputation as a utility watch, that can go anywhere and be used for anything. Especially as at was such a unique looking watch, at an affordable price. The watch particularly gained traction within the younger market, thanks to it’s vivid colours and unique designs, which is still one of it’s main targets today!

Below you can see the first ever Seiko 5 Sports, launched in 1968. This model has come along way, but as you can see, still stays true to it’s predecessor!

Seiko 5 Sports

The new design. Founded in heritage. Created for the individual.

The inspiration for the 2019 Seiko 5 Sports has come from it’s past, and the five decades of Seiko 5 Sports’ success. Each new model in the latest collection shares an updated version of the classic case, all featuring the same arrow shaped minute hand, distinctive markers and uni-directional rotating bezel. The movements are one of Seiko’s most popular, in the form of the automatic Caliber 4R36, which can be manually wound, features a 41 hour power reserve, as well as a hacking second hand.

The new Seiko 5 Sports draws its inspiration from the five decades of Seiko 5 Sports’ success and its design is based on one of Seiko’s most loved sports watches. Every creation in the new collection shares an updated version of this celebrated case and all have the same arrow shaped minute hands, distinctive hour markers and one-way rotating bezel. The movements are all Seiko’s tried and trusted automatic Caliber 4R36, with 24 jewels, optional manual-winding, a 41 hour power reserve and a hacking second hand (this means that when the crown is pulled out, the seconds hand stops, allowing for precise setting).

The full range is made up of 27 different pieces, each in one of the five styles listed below. All of these executions come fitted with new dials and three-dimensional hour markers. The range is made up from models available on a range of different metal bracelet, leather strap, and rubber strap options.
