Watchmaker Timex released a very vintage inspired timepieces called the Timex Marlin last year which was a huge ‘catch’. It sold out almost straight away and even when a new catch of Marlin come off the boats it sold out again.

The Original Timex Marlin

The Marlin was an understated hand wound watch which had no other features than simply telling the time. It’s this simplicity combined with the connection to Todd Snyder which made this watch and its first remake so popular. For those who are interested the original Marlin was produced in the 1960. The original Marlin featured a creme or champagne dial, a stainless steel case and genuine leather lizard grain patterned strap.

It’s name ‘Marlin’ came from the fish and its water resistance, at only $199 it was an absolute ‘catch’, whilst the watch does only look like a $199 watch its important to remember than not all watches have to look bold or over the top to look stylish.

The Timex Marlin BlackoutThe first Marlin also looked much like the original, it had the same 34mm case from edge to edge and a thickness of 10mm which is quite slim.

The dial had so much attention given to it which is hard to find in a timepiece of this value. Where some brands might have cut corners or skimped out on materials to save costs Timex have really stepped up to the plate, producing a beautifully crafted dial featuring Arabic numbering & markers giving the watch a vintage aesthetic to be proud of.

When the original was released it was rather a small watch especially considering the larger style that has been creeping in over the last few years.

Despite this the model still proved extremely popular, it was and still is one of the best mid-century watches that you can obtain for a price tag of less than $200.

Keeping the beautiful hand wound movement in this watch retains all the pleasure that watch enthusiasts such as myself get from vintage style tributes, especially from timepieces of this ‘calibre’.

The dial colour has changed and has now been updated to sunray dial which is also black in colour matching the black lizard patterned genuine leather strap. The timepiece would make the perfect accessory to a business suit or even a wedding tuxedo for that matter. Why not give it as a gift?

“I’ve been wanting to do something more elegant, something you’d style with a suit, and by customising the Marlin with a blackout palette we’ve given it a sophisticated modern feel.”The Timex Marlin Blackout
