The history of Roamer watches begins when the brand was founded in 1888 by Fritz Meyer. Meyer was a pioneering watchmaker who had a goal of creating robust yet elegant watches. He saw watches as a precious accessory that should be owned and worn by everyone. The brand was set up in Solothurn, Switzerland with a workshop of six employees. They produced cylinder escapements for the watch industry. Within its first seven years, Roamer had grown and employed sixty people to produce complete watches. In the year 1895, the brand commemorated the 38th birthday of its founder by developing its own movement.

Roamer movements quickly acquired an excellent reputation for their high precision and reliability. The brand’s name was becoming more well-known both in and outside of Switzerland. Due to its growing popularity, Roamer expanded its factory to accommodate 300 workers.

Before 1907, Roamer was most well-known for its movements. However, this changed when the Soleure watch was launched. Fritz Meyer entered into a partnership with Johann Stüdeli. Stüdeli was a trained and experience watch maker, allowing Roamer to begin its venture into watchmaking. By 1923, Roamer were produces one million units per year. The brand began to produce its own cases so that it could control the overall quality of its watches, ensuring that the customer would receive an incredibly high quality product. Roamer began producing its own watch dials in 1940. This was made possible by the fact that the brand’s factory now employed more than 1200 people. By this point, the Roamer watch case was dust and water resistant to ensure for a robust product.
