Over the course of recent years, Nixon have been making a significant effort to ensure that their products are sustainable and eco-friendly so that no unnecessary damage is done to the environment. By making these changes, Nixon are paving the way for other watch companies to follow in their footsteps towards a more sustainable future.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is celebrated on the 22nd April each year, and this year’s event is fast approaching. Earth Day is recognised as an occasion on which matters regarding environmentalism and the health of the planet must be acknowledged. It is an occasion that can be used to find new ways of improving the attitude that is held towards the planet and improve the way it is treated. The theme for Earth Day 2021 is, ‘Restore Our Planet’, a phrase that will push people to consider changes that can be made in daily life to aid in the recovery and restoration of planet Earth.

The first ever Earth Day was held in 1970. The event was founded by US Senator and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson. Nelson was appalled by the impact of the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California and was moved to hold an event that called for change. A huge number of Americans supported Nelson’s movement, and Earth Day became an annual event that urged leaders to make more decisions with the environment in mind.

Following the first Earth Day, the American government passed many acts in an effort to become an eco-friendlier institution. These acts included the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act amongst many others. The action taken by the US government paved the way for Earth Day to become a globally recognised event in 1990. This globalisation prompted the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit that was held in Rio de Janeiro. Nelson’s Earth Day has had a much bigger impact that he could possibly have anticipated, proving how the actions of one individual can have a tremendous positive effect on the environment.

Today, Earth Day is recognised as the largest secular observance in the world and is recognised by more than a billion people each year. The Earth Day organisation is the world’s largest recruiter to the environmental movement. There are many ways to acknowledge Earth Day. Some choose to use the occasion to consider their personal impact on the environment, others choose to switch off the electricity in their homes for the evening to do their bit in saving the planet. However, some may choose to learn more about introducing sustainable and eco-friendly products into their daily styling, such as Nixon’s Eco-Friendly Watches.

Nixon’s Eco-Friendly Watches

Nixon have created a line of eco-friendly products, including clothing, bags, and watches in an effort to become a more sustainable brand. They have recreated four of their bestselling watch models using recycled plastic to ensure that they are reducing plastic waste as much as possible. Nixon set the aim of finding more sustainable materials to build watch cases, bands, and movements. This mission has been a great success with the brand now building watches that are nearly entirely made of recycled materials.

The H20 Yeah! programme aids Nixon in using REPREVE Our Ocean recycled plastics. These schemes take plastic that would otherwise end up in the ocean and repurpose it. The programmes are able to create high-performing watch cases and bands using these recycled materials, making Nixon a much eco-friendlier brand. Also, Nixon use recycled polyethylene terephthalate wherever possible. This material comes from discarded single use plastic bottles that becoming more of an environmental issue each day. Nixon prevent these bottles from reaching landfill or waterways by giving it a second life by transforming it into watch parts.

To ensure that the eco-friendly watches are as sustainable as possible, Nixon ensure that their materials are sourced ethically and in a planet-friendly manner. A company named Tide use Swiss precision to turn ocean bound plastic into versatile and sustainable base materials for Nixon to use in the creation of their surf watches. The watch brand also collaborates with Plastic Bank and Social Plastic to ensure that their plastic collectors receive a fair wage so that they can provide for their families.
