A Guide on Gifting Jewellery for Mother’s Day

In the United Kingdom, Mother’s Day, or Mothering Sunday, is used to celebrate mothers, grandmothers, maternal figures and anyone who takes on the role of a mother. Many choose to give gifts to the mother figures in their lives to express how love and appreciation for them. Flowers and chocolates are popular gift options, but many take the path of gifting jewellery for Mother’s Day.

The Origins of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day has been celebrated in the United Kingdom for centuries, but its popularity has risen and fallen over the years. The original Mother’s Day celebrations took place during the Middle Ages. Throughout this time, many people had to move away from their family homes to find work. Some had to make this move at a very young age. Due to this, a custom developed to allow people to travel home to visit their ‘mother’ churches. This gave families the opportunity to reunite once a year and became an event that was celebrated and highly anticipated. The first celebrations took place on the fourth Sunday of Lent, as do the modern-day Mother’s Day celebrations. This is why the date of Mother’s Day changes each year in the same way Easter does.

Later, Mother’s Day became a day when domestic servants were pardoned from their duties and given the day off to attend their ‘mother’ church with their own mothers and families. As servants were rarely given time to themselves to be able to spend with their loved ones, this became a very special day for many. Over the course of the years, the way people lived changed. This meant that it was no longer necessary to provide a specific day for people to visit their families as laws had been created to ensure people were not over-worked. As a result, by the 1920s the Mother’s Day tradition had dwindled.

The Modern Mother’s Day

In the early 20th Century in the United States of America, Anna Jarvis hosted a memorial at her local chuch to honour her own, and all mothers. This Constance Penswick-Smith to pen a book calling for the reintroduction of Mother’s Day celebrations to the UK. This plea was heard, and old traditions were merged with new American inspired ones to form the Mothering Sunday we now celebrate annually in the United Kingdom.

Many people celebrate by giving gifts to the mother figures in their lives as a way of showing love and appreciation. Jewellery always makes a lovely gift as it is a very personal item. The person giving the gift has to carefully select the piece that they think would most suit their mother and her tastes. Gifting jewellery for Mother’s Day is a way to show a mother how much she is cared about and appreciated.
