Sinn’s new U1 DE watch

Sinn’s new U1 DE watch

On the 3rd of October Germany will celebrate the historic reunion of the former German Democratic Republic and Federal Republic of German. German watch brand Sinn have announced the release of the U1 DE model as a way to celebrate 30 years since the German Reunification. Sinn’s new U1 DE watch is released as a limited edition piece, with only 300 models available.

For Sinn reunification has a larger more personal significance as a German watchmaker. The brand and watch case manufacturer Sächsische Uhrentechnologie GmbH Glashütte (SUG) have embraced the merging of the east and the west. The two companies have had a long and mutually beneficial relationship since its establishment in 1999. Since 2002,  Lothar Schmidt has held 74% of all SUG shares. Together the owner of Sinn, Lothar Schmidt and the Doctor of Engineering, co-owner and Managing Director of SUG, Ronald Boldt, managed to create and develop the prominent high-quality watch case manufacturer.

When designing the watch, Sinn has taken inspiration from Germany’s flag colours. The watch’s 44 mm case is made of highly robust German submarine steel. The steel of the case and crown are seawater-resistant. To increase the durability and scratch-resistance of the case, it has been treated with a black hard coating. A sapphire crystal covers the dial. The crystal is anti-reflective on either side. The crown on the case is at the 4 o’clock position. Contrasting the black dial are large white luminescent indices. A date aperture is featured at the 3 o’clock position. The watch has luminescent block hands. Its second’s hand adds interest to the otherwise utilitarian look of the watch as it is high-gloss gold-plated. The case back is screwed down as is the crown. An engraving of the limited edition serial number also features on the case back. The black unidirectional bezel is contrasted by a minute scale in white and red. A black silicone strap secures the watch and guarantees ultimate comfort.

The movement featured in the watch is automatic with calibre SW 200-1. It has 26 jewels and a frequency of 28,800 A/h. It also has a seconds stop function. The watch is anti-magnetic as per DIN 8309 and is water-resistant to up to 100 bars or 1000 metres.
