The Longines Avigation Watch Type A-7

A few days ago, on the 21st of July,  Longines announced a new variation of their Avigation Watch Type A-7. The model is inspired by pilot’s watches from the 1930s, more specifically a model ordered by the U.S. Air Force in 1935. Created to the army’s specifications the timepiece guarantees ultimate accuracy. The Longines Avigation Watch Type A-7 is a part of the brand’s luxury Heritage collection. Timepieces from this line are all unique pieces modelled after historical watches. All models in the collection have their own individual history. Longines has revived the watches as a homage to the explorers and the adventurers who were ahead of their time. This watch is dedicated to the brave pioneers of the aviation industry who paved the way for modern aeronautics. Longines have kept their design as close to the watches’ vintage counterparts as possible while combining it with modern-day cutting-edge technologies.

The Longines Avigation Watch Type A-7

The new Avignation variation resembles the original pilot’s watches more closely than the one launched in 2016. Most original models, though not all, featured a dark dial and light hands to make it easier to read the watch, unlike the dial of the lighter in colour 2016 model. The new Avignation Type A-7 has the same specifications as the original watch from the 1930s. What makes this Longines’ pilot’s watch stand out is the dial. Rotated to 40° clockwise. Vintage pilot’s watches were manufactured in this way to follow the orientation of the instruments on the dashboard of the plane. The watches were worn on the underside of the wrist so that the pilot would not have to let go of the controls to read it.

Large Super-LumiNova filled hands and indices contrast the matt dial. The model also features a large fluted crown at the 12 o’clock position. The large crown allows for the watch to be set easier while wearing gloves. Its large stainless steel case and the dark brown alligator leather with top-stitching carries on the model’s vintage look while still maintaining a timeless silhouette. This model features a single push-piece chronograph. The chronograph mechanism consists of a central 60 seconds hand and a 30 minute subdial under the 12 o’clock hour marker on the dial. Other features include a small seconds sundial above the 6 o’clock marker, hours, minutes and a date aperture. Adding interest to the model and tying the design together is a set of elegant cathedral-style hands.

The elegant Longines Avigation Watch A-7 is for those who want a piece of history; for those with a passion for flying and feel a pull towards weightlessness. Whether you claim the skies or admire those who do the Avigation A-7 is the watch for you. This model is a must-have for any history buff, aviation aficionado and pilot alike.
