There’s a chill in the air and it doesn’t appear to be from the weather. The scariest time of the year is upon us but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with it. This Halloween, Swatch has decided to surprise everyone with their newest release. Swatch’s new terrifying Halloween watches are both inventive and genuinely a bit scary. They take traditional Halloween and horror elements and add an extra spooky layer with the clever use of luminescence. The brand also uses the eerie phrases “Your time is coming” and “Run but you can’t hide” as an additional spine-chilling touch. The two new watches are part of Swatch’s Big Bold collection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first of the two timepieces is inspired by sugar skulls also known as Calaveras<\/a>. Calaveras are a traditional Mexican practice used to celebrate the holiday Day of the Dead. The handmade skulls are placed on offering altars in honour of departed loved ones. The tradition is believed to have dated to ancient times and to have roots in the Aztec, Mayan, and Toltec celebrations of the holiday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case of the watch is made of black matt plastic and features a black silicone strap with grey and mint green geometric detailing. The case measures 47 mm in diameter and 11.75 mm in thickness. A quartz movement powers the watch. The dial is also matt black with a subtle sugar skull outline. Mint green detailing can also be seen. Contrasting the dial are a set of mint-green skeletonized hands for the minutes and hours. The luminescence of the watch charges during the day and at night the skull stands out in turquoise and green. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other timepiece in the Halloween line is inspired by clowns. More importantly scary clowns. Known as Coulrophobia, the fear of clowns is a fairly common occurrence with 12% of the UK having it. Clowns’ frequent portrayal as the villain in horror movies doesn’t help their rep either. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The clown on the dial appears similar to the infamous Stephen King character Pennywise. Similarly to the first model, the case and bracelet are matt black and made of plastic and silicone, respectively. The strap features a diamond pattern on one end and a striped- on the other. The dial of the watch has red detailing resembling hair in addition to the subtle clown-like face. The face’s scary features are exaggerated through its pointed teeth, makeup and eyes without pupils. The luminescence changes the colour of the watch to turquoise and green. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
