The movement of a watch is the core process that makes the watch “go”. Almost all watch companies around the globe purchase parts or all of the watches movement from other companies. It is rare that a company makes its own movements, companies that do are classed as ‘vertically integrated’ this means that they make all their movements themselves without any parts of assistance from any other companies. The companies that make the movements are commonly referred to as the Manufacturers and these companies that make their own movements are usually more desirable and exclusive however with these comes a higher price tag.<\/p>\n
The battery and powering of your watch is another important aspect to research when looking for a watch as it is core power that drives your watch. There are many different ways to power your watch and the sections below break these down for you:<\/p>\n

The manual movement is commonly called a hand-wound movement and is the oldest recorded type of movement made dating back to the 16th century and requires daily winding in order for it to work. This movement requires a lot of care and is usually found in more collectable and expensive watches, this type of movement is very popular with collectors due to the complexity and delicate parts. Many companies have tried to reproduce this movement but only Seiko has succeeded in inventing the components and technologies required. Two of our favourite Kinetic watches are the Seiko Prospex Kinetic GMT<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Seiko Prospex Kinetic Dive Watch<\/a>.<\/p>\n Citizen<\/a> Eco-Drive technology\u00a0uses light from any\u00a0natural or artificial light source to charge the watch. It converts it into energy, which is stored in a permanently rechargeable solar cell made from a titanium lithium ion battery. This type of watch is extremely popular with the market today making Citizen<\/a> one of our best selling brands. Eco-Drive watches can be charged by exposing the\u00a0watch to ambient light on a daily basis and this should be sufficient to keep it charged. Please note charging the watch with with crown pulled out to position one means the watch will charge in one third of the time of normal charging. It is quite similar to the Citizen<\/a> in that it can almost entirely run itself apart from the fact that this movement is a lot more ‘High Tech’ and collectors often like the tough solar models because of this. It works by winding itself whist being worn on the wrist, eliminating the need for daily hand winding. If you remove your watch from your wrist for a prolonged period it will stop charging as it will no longer be working and it would need to be worn again and the time adjusted. At First Class Watches we would recommend this movement if you like the vintage, delicate style of the Manual Movement but find it hard to wind the watch every day.<\/p>\n This is the simplest movement and is used in a lot of lower cost watches. Its reliability makes it very popular with a number of brands around the world. If you are looking for a cost effective watch then we would definitely recommend a watch with a quartz movement the only downside to these is the 2-3 year battery change that would be necessary.<\/p>\n When looking for a watch I always do some research into what I am looking for it to be able to do, the core functions of the watch and break the points into two main categories “wants” and “needs”. These are what the watch needs to be able to do to make it a worthwhile purchase and the wants that are not essential but would be beneficial.<\/p>\n When looking for a watch bear in mind what you need it to do.
