A\nBrief History of Father\u2019s Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Father\u2019s\nDay is an occasion that is used to honour fatherhood and paternal bonds. It was\nfirst celebrated in the United States of America as a way to mark the tragic\ndeaths of many men and fathers in a mining accident. The celebration was held\nin West Virginia on the 5th<\/sup> July 1908. The event was the creation of\nGrace Clayton whose father sadly died in the accident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another\nFather\u2019s Day event was held with the influence of Sonora Dodd in 1910. She\nwanted to acknowledge her own father\u2019s efforts in raising their family after her\nmother died in childbirth. The event was intended to be held on 5th<\/sup>\nJune, Dodd\u2019s father\u2019s birthday, but it was delayed until the third Sunday of\nthe month to give the preachers enough time to prepare their sermons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\nmore widespread Father\u2019s Day celebration did not become popularised until the\n1930s when Dodd enlisted the help of some merchants. The merchants realised\nthat they may be able to profit from such an occasion and aided Dodd in spreading\nthe message of Father\u2019s Day. Their efforts drew presidential interest from\nWoodrow Wilson, but despite several attempts the holiday was not yet formally\nrecognised. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\nwas not until Lyndon Johnson\u2019s presidency that the date for Father\u2019s Day was\nofficially designated in 1966. This was signed into law by Richard Nixon in\n1972. As has been the case with several other holidays, the UK followed in the\nUSA\u2019s footsteps and began celebrating Father\u2019s Day on the third Sunday of June\neach year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
