The first ever Earth Day was held in 1970. The event was founded by US Senator and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson. Nelson was appalled by the impact of the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California and was moved to hold an event that called for change. A huge number of Americans supported Nelson\u2019s movement, and Earth Day became an annual event that urged leaders to make more decisions with the environment in mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These acts included the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species\nAct amongst many others.
