Over the last few years we’ve seen the UK jump on the Black Friday bandwagon. A day which we had no reason to \u201ccelebrate\u201d (is celebrate the right word?) in the in the past has slowly crept into the UK consciousness thanks to American retailers. We’ve all seen videos of people on the news climbing over each other in shops to get cut-price TV’s and DVD players. What Is Black Friday, Anyway?<\/h2>\n

Black Friday has been the busiest shopping day of the year in the United States since 2005. It happens on the first Friday after Thanksgiving, which is not an official holiday but most employers (apart from retailers) and schools allow it as a day off in the States. Most retailers open their stores early (some as early as 6AM!) and offer promotional Black Friday deals to entice customers in.<\/p>\n

The first store to offer Black Friday deals in the UK was Currys, offering laptops for less than \u00a350 at Staples Corner in London. Other American companies offered Black Friday promotions sporadically over the following years. The day was popularised in the UK in 2013 by Asda (a Wal-Mart store) who promoted the \u201cWal-Mart’s Black Friday by Asda\u201d campaign. With the heightened press coverage and a sense of excitement around Black Friday in 2014 more and more companies started to offer Black Friday deals.<\/p>\n

The press coverage after the scenes of fighting over items offered in the 2014 Black Friday sale put a bit of a dampener on the day, but many retailers are still offering huge discounts in 2015. Although, just like in the United States, the deals don’t just appear on Black Friday anymore. Many retailers, like us here at First Class Watches, offer Black Friday deals throughout the whole Black Friday weekend. Which goes from Black Friday right through till \u201cCyber Monday!\u201d<\/p>\n

As well as the United States and the United Kingdom, Black Friday also appears in other countries around the world. Romania have had successful Black Friday’s since 2011, in 2014 the day had even spread as far as Nigeria.<\/p>\n
